Alex Boye gives Lorde’s “Royals” an African Makeover

In 2013, a disease known as “Lorde Fever” overtook the Internet. Guitar-wielding teens and chart-topping DJ’s alike caught the infection. Some survived while others perished among the negative comments and down votes. One man, however, rose above the ashes. Alex Boye, a musician who gained popularity through his African twist on popular songs, produced a head-bobbing replica on par with the original.

The British singer tapped into his Nigerian roots and uploaded himself performing Lorde’s “Royals.” This video features Boye with his face painted in a total of six designs, each representing a different character. The signature finger-snap of the original tune is replaced by the clacking of claves while the bass is imitated by a combination of beat boxing and hand drums. An energetic harmony composed of overlay recordings of Boye singing resonates throughout the chorus. Said musicality, consisting of powerful chanting and melodic belting, is what distinguishes Boye’s cover from the typically mediocre reproductions floating around the web. The African themes and accents compliment Lorde’s lyrics quite well while maintaining the minimalism of the original.

Listening to a middle-aged man sing about Cadillac fantasies and torn up towns with a Nigerian twang produces a satirical effect. Even if the thought of the melodramatic melody of Lorde’s overplayed hit makes your skin crawl, give this version a listen. It is worthy of gracing your eardrums.
