From blockbusters like Black Pantherand Mission Impossible: Falloutto smaller hits such as The Favourite and A Star is Born, 2018 was a great year for film.  As with every year though, there are some films that slip under the radar and either don’t make the money or get the recognition that they deserve. So, without further ado, here are 5 movies that you might’ve missed in 2018.

  1. Game Night

The earliest film released in 2018 on this list, Game Night is one of the most inventive and unique comedies to come out in the last decade.  The film combines multiple genres from thriller to mystery and succeeds in not only being a great comedy but just a great movie as well.  The entire cast is solid with Rachel McAdams and Jesse Plemons being particular standouts. This movie has something for almost everyone, and I highly recommend watching it if you have not already.

  1. Upgrade

Upgradewas one of the many surprise gems of 2018.  Released by horror factory Blumhouse, the film was released to critical acclaim as being one of the best action films in recent memory and of the year. While the film was not a financial success, what makes Upgradeso special is the quality despite the small budget that director Leigh Whannell was given.  Part action, part body horror with a tiny bit of mystery, Upgradeis a must see for fans of the genre.

  1. Blindspotting

The most impactful and relevant film that I saw in 2018 was easily Blindspotting.  Starring Daveed Diggs of Hamilton fame and newcomer Rafael Casal, the film tells the story of a man at the end of his probation term as he revaluates both his best friend and his life.  The film deals with a lot of intense topics and yet it manages to balance them excellently.  Additionally, the film utilizes rap in a way that is both thrilling and a plot device at the same time.  It is unfortunate that this film has not gotten the recognition that it deserves but I highly recommend watching it if it seems at all interesting to you.

  1. Widows

Prior to its release, there was a fair amount of hype for Widows, the newest film from director Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave).  While the film received solid reviews from critics, the popularity of Bohemian Rhapsodyand a weak release date hurt the film’s box office performance.  Widowsis a heist film which follows a group of widows who are forced to pull off a major heist in order to pay off a debt left behind by their deceased husbands.  The film is filled with excellent performances and a solid script with twists and turns throughout.  Widowsis a solid heist film and an even better crime drama.

  1. Mid90s

Jonah Hill’s directorial debut Mid90s is one of the smaller films on this list.  The film is a coming of age tale that takes place in 1990s Los Angeles and is focused around skateboarding and skate culture.  The film is incredibly raw, and its unique aspect ratio separates it from other films like it.  While it was not as critically acclaimed as some of the other movies on this list, I still recommend Mid90s as a solid film for fans of skateboarding or even casual audiences as well.
