Battle royale games exploded into the competitive and casual gaming scenes within the past year. Household names such as Fortnite, Player’s Unknown Battleground, and Call of Duty all have a share of this burgeoning market. As of February 2019, there is one more competitor in the battle royale.

EA and Respawn entertainment have partnered to bring us Apex Legends. Wisely, Apex Legends is free-to-play, but in game purchases are available for player customization and styling.

Apex Legends, like Fortnite, is a battle royale game that features squads of 3 in one giant map. Teams dive in together to loot, search, and destroy all opponents to become the Apex Champion. Set in EA’s Titanfall universe, the game has a futuristic aesthetic with heavy themes of war. Apex offers players 6 Legends to select from, with 2 legends able to be unlocked with in game currency, which can be purchased.

EA was clearly influenced by Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch in their application of Legend abilities and ultimate abilities. Each Legend has their own skill set and abilities that when used correctly, are game changing. For example, combat medic Lifeline has passive abilities that decrease healing time, and an ultimate ability that calls in a care package featuring high tier loot. Lifeline is important for any team because of her resourcefulness. Care packages can be make or break, and her healing drone can prevent further damage when pinned down.

Similarly, Bangalore is also a key player. Her kit includes smoke grenades and speed boosts upon being damaged making her great for quick damage and eluding targets. Partnered with Technological Tracker Bloodhound’s Eye of Allfather ability which reveals nearby enemies, Bangalore’s smoke blinds the enemy but shrouds your squad. Players have begun dissecting the games mechanics and are quickly learning what strategies work best. With zip-lines, sliding, and no damage from falling, Apex is a hyper fast-paced game perfect for anyone looking for a change of pace.

Apex Legends is available on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC for free. Happy Fragging.
