Broad Street Run Director Jim Marino with Carli Showmaker

In about one month, Broad Street will be shutting down for the day to host the 2017 Blue Cross Broad Street Run.  Carli Showmaker sat down in the WHIP studio with Race Director Jim Marino to talk about the history of the race and how Philadelphia Parks and Recreation is preparing for the big upcoming race day.

With the event growing from it’s original 1,500 runners to 40,000 runners, proper preparations must be made to ensure that the race is able to run smoothly are crucial. Marino discusses how important the volunteers are on the day of the race, as well as the opportunities for people and groups to volunteer with race day preparations. Volunteers and volunteer groups can help with everything from putting together snack bags for runners to receive after the race, to participating in Philadelphia’s Spring Cleanup Day.

The Broad Street Run offers the opportunity to receive a stipend for the hard work that the groups are providing, as well as Broad Street Run t-shirts to all volunteers. To find out more about how to get involved with volunteering, click here.

The 2017 Blue Cross Broad Street Run will take place on May 7th at 8 a.m.
