HBO will soon be pleasing true crime fans with a new documentary series detailing the case of Adnan Syed, which was popularized a while back by the hit podcast, Serial.

Season one of the true crime podcast released in October 2014 and wrapped up in December of the same year with a quick 12 episode run. The show, on its third season now, is co-created, co-produced, and hosted by Sarah Koenig, an American journalist and radio personality. Three updates since the season’s finale have been released but according to critics none have lived up to the show’s original run.

Five years later HBO is bringing the case back to public eye with a new docuseries titled The Case Against Adnan Syed. Many issues with Syed’s case were brought up in Serial’s initial season, but the trailer for HBO’s new series, which dropped on Tuesday, promises to bring up even more questions.

In case none of this rings any bells, Adnan Syed was charged and convicted for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, in 2000 and has been behind bars since. It sounds simple but things are far more complicated than they seem. Contradicting evidence and conflicting testimonies are found throughout Syed’s case, which is what lead people to dig into the mystery themselves, not unlike Koenig in Serial.

The four-part series, scheduled to premiere some time in 2019, comes not-so-coincidentally after Serial’s Koenig succeeded in getting Syed’s conviction repealed, with overwhelming support from the podcast’s fanbase. Syed is still behind bars, though, waiting for a retrial, making the release of this new series from HBO even more compelling.
