February 20 may be just another day for most people, but for fans of the alternative rock band Nirvana, it serves as Kurt Cobain’s birthday. On what would have been the legendary front man’s 53rd birthday ,it’s important to recognize the magnitude of Kurt Cobain’s influence and impact. Nirvana changed the way underground bands could have influence in the mainstream, while also maintaining their anti-corporate imagine. Fans can probably recall the famous cover on Rolling Stone magazine with the self-created t-shirt worn by Cobain that read “Corporate Magazines Still Suck” scribbled in black sharpie.

To even begin to think of the influence this band has had since their breakthrough in 1991 with Nevermind, is incredible to think and they continue to carry this influence even into genres other than rock music. Many hip-hop artists attribute Cobain as someone who has inspired them, such as Denzel Curry, and the late Lil Peep.

Over the years there has been unreleased Nirvana and Cobain material, documentaries, and a slew of bootleg live albums that fans can’t seem to get enough of. To commemorate one of the greatest musicians of the last 30 years, it’s worth putting some of the bands best songs on a playlist.
