Temple Celebrates Homecoming Week

BY JAYA MONTAGUE

Students put their textbooks to the side and alumni paused their responsibilities to wear their cherry and white one more time for this year’s homecoming.

The Main Campus Program Board (MCPB) kicked off the week with SOCK-Tober Fest.

Temple set Guinness World Records for the most socks donated in eight hours and the biggest group wearing mismatched socks.

Other highlights of the week include the Owlchella concert and the annual Homecoming pageant.

The Royalty Court this year includes Lisa Antoine, Kalen Allen, Kelsie Canty, Shelby Alegrand, and Sheryl Sesay.

After a night of answering questions and performing their talents, Allen and Sesay took the title of homecoming king and queen Thursday night in the Howard Gittis Student Center.

This week also saw many stars.

Kevin O’Leary, businessman, and judge on ABC’s “Shark Tank” talked to students about his success on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at the Temple Performing Arts Center.

Rappers Tee Grizzley and Lil’ Yatchy performed for OwlChella at the Liacouras Center on Friday, Oct. 13 at 8:00 PM.

Raven Cordner, a psychology major, wishes that the events had more organization.

“It would have helped if we won [the game] … and I feel like the only real bad part was that Young Thug did not perform at the concert,” Cordner said.

Another event is the Homecoming Golf Cart Parade. Student groups drove their decorated golf carts on Polett Walk Friday afternoon, with the Black Student Union (BSU) winning first place.

Naya Blue, a psychology major and secretary for BSU, expressed joy at her group winning the parade.

“The golf cart competition, it was really fun. We were all able to come together and put our ideas,” Blue said.

The parade led to a pep rally where students watched Grammy-winning artist, Wyclef Jean perform in front of the Bell Tower.

The week ended in a football game against the University of Connecticut.
