Over the last week, three Temple University Football seniors have been named to national watch lists. First, on Monday, redshirt senior quarterback Frank Nutile was named to the Maxwell Award watch list and senior safety Delvon Randall was named to the Bednarick Award watch list. On Wednesday, senior running back Ryquell Armstead was named to Doak Walker Watch List.

About the awards:

Maxwell Award: Named in honor of Robert W. Maxwell, the award is given to America’s College Player of the Year. Nutile is among 41 quarterbacks added to the list but one of only seven players from the American Athletic Conference.

Bednarik Award: The Chuck Bednarik award is presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year. Former Temple Owls, Tyler Matakevich and Sean Chandler, were named to the watch list in 2016 and 2017 respectively; Matakevich won the award in 2016.

Doak Walker Award: This award is given to the country’s top college running back. Armstead is one of 62 players named on the list, but one of only three from the American Athletic Conference. The Doak Walker Award is the only major collegiate award that requires candidates to be in good academic standing and on track to graduate within one year of students of the same classification.

About the Players:

Frank Nutile: After taking over for an injured Logan Marchi, Frank Nutile made six starts in 2017 throwing for 1,520 yards, 12 touchdowns, and only 6 interceptions. With Nutile under center, the Owls won three of their last four games to reach bowl eligibility and then beat FIU 28-3 in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl. Nutile was named game MVP for his performance which included 254 passing yards and two touchdowns (one rushing).

Delvon Randall: Senior Safety Delvon Randall will wear a single digit for the second straight season this year after a breakout performance last season. In 2017, Randall recorded 80 tackles including 6.5 tackles-for-loss; he also matched a career high number of interceptions last year with four.

Ryquell Armstead: After a breakout sophomore season, Armstead battled injuries last season. Despite that, he rushed for 604 yards and 5 rushing touchdowns to bring his career totals to 1,714 rushing yards and 21 rushing touchdowns. Armstead is on pace to become the ninth Owl to rush for at least 2,000 yards in Temple Football history.
