PHILADELPHIA, PA (March, 2022) – Temple University’s student-run radio station, WHIP Radio, is celebrating taking home the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Awards for Best Website and Best Station Promotional Event for Rocktober 2021.

Rocktober is a Battle of the Bands competition held over WHIP’s social media each October, with the winners being granted a live streamed concert in which they headline. The goal of this competition is to support and uplift local music acts within the Temple and Philadelphia communities. Rocktober began in 2020 and has become an annual WHIP event.

Rocktober serves as the main project for the Street Team (which includes WHIP’s promotions, events, graphics, video and social media directors and their department members) at WHIP for the majority of the fall semester.

“Rocktober starts in Street Team’s mind from the moment we get back to campus in August, and it runs throughout October,” as WHIP Radio Promotions Director Caitlin McGeehan said. “It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it when we see our plans come to life with the concert. Plus, we get to enjoy and support all of the Philadelphia music throughout the competition.”

In addition to Street Team members, key figures in the production of Rocktober on WHIP’s staff include Events Director Lea Wesolowski, Social Media Director Chynna Dunneman, Graphics Director Santo Donia, Video Director Jacob Kressly, Assistant General Manager Celina Ehrlich, and General Manager Ray Dunne.

WHIP Radio’s website took home the title of Best Website from the 2022 IBS Awards. This year’s Web Director John Peterson and Press Director Samantha Sullivan created the “New Track Jukebox” series for new release reviews and weekly themed playlists for web writers. The Entertainment Department shared their takes on the latest films and shows and covered press conferences with the actors starring in them. The WHIP website continued to be home to the station’s signature Temple Owls sports coverage throughout the year, as well.
